A journal of all the food I've eaten, most of which has been in Tokyo. 1/5: Bad, try to avoid. 2/5: Mwoah, chances are the restaurant nextdoor is at least as good if not better. 3/5: Solid, safe option if you're in the area already. 4/5: Very good, worth a little detour. 5/5: Sublime, must visit if at all possible!

Udon in Fushimi(Nagoya) @ 山本屋本店 広小路伏見店
It started off well. The vegetables were fresh and tasted good. However the main course, the Udon, was extremely disappointing. The noodles didn't seem properly cooked and neither the noodles nor the soup were particularly tasty. The restaurant on the other hand is very nice and the staff was very friendly, but that can't save a restaurant if the food is no good.
Now I do have to note, the fact I was so displeased may have something to do with the fact, I don't particularly like Udon. Also illustrated by this restaurant's fairly high rating on tabelog.com. However, I do remember eating this dish last year in Nagoya aswell, at the restaurant of the mother of a friend. This restaurant's price was twice as high at 1785Yen, but the other restaurant's food was more than twice as tasty.
Rating: 1.5/5
Recommendation: If you don't care about food at all, this place is quite good, if you want to eat something tasty though, stay clear. Then again, it's quite popular on tabelog.com, so maybe I'm not a Udon guy.

Unagi in Sakae(Nagoya) @ しら河 栄ガスビル店
First off I have to mention, I can't compare this to other Unagi restaurants. I have had Unagi before, but not at a real, proper restaurant that specializes in Unagi.
Unagi is basically eel. A lot of people have probably eaten Unagi in sushi in some way. However, not so many people will have eaten in a restaurant specializing in Unagi, first of all because I'm not even sure they exist outside of Japan, second of all because even Japanese people don't eat Unagi very often. This was illustrated by the fact that it was the first time eating Unagi Hitsumabushi Don for one of the two Japanese friends I went to this restaurant with aswell. They told me it's considered a bit of an expensive dish that's only eaten on special occasions.
They had a variety of dishes on the menu, all including eel, but the most popular thing is Unagi Hitsumabashi Don, which is basically Unagi Donburi(Unagi on Rice), but you're going to get 3 different dishes out of the one bowl. I went for the 3000Yen set menu, which also included some sides such as these Tamago filled with Unagi Liver.

Unagi Donburi
So here's the deal. First you mix up the rice and the eel and then you're going to take out a third of it and eat it plain and simple. This is your first round. For the 2nd round you take out another third of the Unagi Don and this time you add a few spices to give it a bit of a different taste. Then for the third and final round, you take out the remaining Unagi Don, add spices, wasabi and some seaweed. Then you ask the restaurant staff to bring you the boiling water and you can add water to make the following soup:
3rd Round
All 3 rounds taste distinctly different. I personally prefer the simplicity of the first round, but that's pure preference. I can't honestly say any of the rounds taste significantly better than others. They simply all taste good in different ways!
As mentioned at the start, I don't have any other Unagi meals to compare this to, but I thought this was a pretty good meal overall.
Rating: 3.5/5
Best Unagi Round: 1st, I like plain and simple the best.
Recommendation: If you haven't eaten Unagi Hitsumabashi Don before, like I had. It's time you check it out!

Sushi in Nagoya Station area(Nagoya) @ 鮨 魯山 名鉄店
I am SO happy right now. I had almost forgotten what proper sushi tastes like. This restaurant serves sushi like it's supposed to be! Let me explain.
There's a lot of things that go into making sushi. While the quality of the ingredients make all Japanese sushi superior to all but a handful of places outside of Japan, good ingredients is not the only thing that matters when making sushi. It helps a LOT, but there's more to it, a lot more. To me it seems like one of the hardest foods to get right. Sadly enough, even in Japan the majority of sushi restaurants simply make all the sushi, put it on a plate and then serve it. This is not the best way. The best way is to serve it piece by piece, like Sukiyabashi Jiro in Ginza and Sushi Tetsu in London do. Preferably with soy sauce added already, so that you can eat it right away. Sushi Rosan does it exactly like this.
When I came in I asked for a seat at the counter and was basically assigned my own sushi chef. There didn't seem to be a clear menu, so ordering was slightly tricky, but they were patient enough to explain it to me. I chose the big '12 piece' set and soon the sushi and other dishes started coming. First off was the egg custard:
Quite easily the best egg custard I've had so far. There were a lot of little hidden gems in there such as a piece of prawn and mushroom. Those I've seen before, but this was the first time I saw Salmon Roe in there. It was a brilliant addition! Very nice and salty. The egg also was much less oily than some of the other egg custards I've had. The Miso soup was also good and I hadn't even gotten to the sushi yet.

大とろ- Fatty Tuna
First off was a fantastic piece of O-Toro. Basically everything was perfect on it's own. The rice was nice and warm, the fish was very cold, the soy sauce was already on there, perfect amount of wasabi. A piece of heaven, although just like the time I ate at Sushi Kanesaka in Tokyo(2 michelin stars) I thought the taste of the rice was a little bit too strong and pushed out the taste of the fish just slightly. Nonetheless this was miles better than anything I've eaten in the last 3-4 months.
すずき - Sea Bream
あじ - Horse Mackerel
Just look at it!!! SO beautiful!
ほたて - Scallop
あかみ - Tuna
I also have to give special credit to this seemingly normal piece of Tuna. I saw him rasping something when making this piece, but I couldn't tell what it was. It didn't look like there was anything on the piece of sushi when it was served to me, but it tasted very special and there definitely was something added to it. I'm not sure what, but it was great!
うに - Sea urchin and いくら - Salmon Roe
These pieces were FANTASTIC! This was honestly the first time since Sukiyabashi Jiro that I was able to enjoy a piece of Salmon Roe. Obviously it wasn't as perfect as Jiro's, which was the single best piece of food I've ever eaten. However, the seaweed was definitely warm, just like the rice, but the Salmon Roe was nice and cold.
The Sea Urchin, was one of the best pieces of Sea Urchin I've ever had, possibly the best. It's kind of a 3 way tie between Jiro, a restaurant in Osaka and this one. I've said it before, Uni is very hard to do right, but they certainly did!
えび - Prawn and たまご - Omelette
I often find that prawn is either very weak and tasteless or one of the better pieces of the meal. In this case it was the latter! The tamago was good, but I've had better.
Seared 大とろ - Seared Fatty Tuna
Normally I'm all about simple, raw, basic sushi and seriously dislike these kinds of pieces that are seared or grilled. However, this restaurant changed my opinion about seared sushi completely. This piece was actually sublime and from now on I will no longer have a bad prejudice against seared pieces of sushi. Thank you, Sushi Rosan for making me see the light!
あなご - Eel
2 variations. Salted and with sauce. I've had a salted one before at Sushi Kanesaka, which I thought was not as good as the sauced one. In this case however the salted one was even better than the sauced piece. Absolutely outstanding.
That concluded my set menu, however I was digging their sushi so much, I asked my chef if he had a personal favorite of mine. Hamaguri. He said he did and soon delivered:
はまぐり - Orient Clam
Absolutely AWESOME! Loved this, just like I did at Jiro.
As if this wasn't enough already, I was served dessert aswell, which was apparently included in the set.
Bit of a bad picture. There was a little drink that I thought was nice and warm, but a bit tasteless. The bean type of things were sweet, but nothing special. The green tea pudding thingy(I've had it before, just don't know the name), was quite good.
While eating dessert I had a nice chat with my chef about a couple things. I told him the sushi had been simply fantastic and that it was possibly the 2nd best sushi I've ever had after Sukiyabashi Jiro. Because, quite frankly, I think it is. Sushi Kanesaka was great and 1 restaurant in Osaka last year was also very good, but Sushi Rosan definitely delivers more consistant high quality than the place in Osaka and compared to Sushi Kanesaka, it's pretty close. Taking into consideration that this at 5000Yen was only a third of Sushi Kanesaka's bill, I think this has to be the 2nd best Sushi I've eaten so far.
If I get any sort of opportunity to... I will be back before leaving Nagoya on Tuesday. This was FANTASTIC!!!
Rating: 5/5
Best Piece: I cannot pick. At least half the pieces stood out. These were: Tuna, Sea urchin, Salmon Roe, Prawn, Seared Fatty Tuna, Both Eels and the Hamaguri.
Worst Piece: The dessert? All the sushi was great, no worst pieces!
Recommendation: Most importantly: Eat at the counter!!
If you live in Nagoya... MUST-VISIT!!!
If you live anywhere else... there's probably alternatives, especially in Tokyo, but if you happen to be in Nagoya, any self-respecting person that likes sushi, should go here!

Sushi in Nagoya Station(Nagoya) @ すし 桂 名古屋JRタワーズプラザ店
At 2600Yen for lunch, this is not great value for money. The sushi was allright, but considering the slightly upscale price for lunch, I'd have expected more. The quality of the fish was not the greatest. The Chu or O-Toro, whichever one it was, was not much fattier than the non-fatty Tuna. The Sea Urchin was a nice one, but that was about the only piece that I thought was great. The rest was somewhat average and overpriced.

Best Piece: Uni - Sea Urchin
Worst Piece: The seaweed one, of which I don't know the name

Izakaya in Nagoya Station area(Nagoya) @ 和民 名駅4丁目店
Unfortunately enough I did not take a picture.
I thought this Izakaya was slightly better than the 'Yama-chan' I ate at the day before, but again nothing was amazing. I had some good Okonomiyaki, Yaki Soba and Yakitori that were surprisingly good, but one other unknown dish was actually quite bad as were the fries. The atmosphere was quite nice however and it was a lot better decorated than 'Yama-chan'.

Sushi in Fushimi(Nagoya) @ 東鮓本店
After either being denied access or just barely missing the lunch shift at the restaurant around the corner and desperately wanting to eat sushi, I walked into the first place I saw. This turned out to be a bit of a mistake. While at ~1500Yen it was pretty cheap, it was not pretty good. It was actually pretty disappointing. At only a handful pieces it was a bit overpriced, especially for lunch. Furthermore the quality of the fish was pretty bad for Japanese standards.
Every single other person in the restaurant was at least 3 times my age(no joke), so I think it's probably not targetted at young connoisseurs like myself. However, this did mean they were playing nice, relaxing classical music for their target audience, which I too was able to appreciate. The food however did not satisfy me.

Izakaya in Fushimi(Nagoya) @ 世界の山ちゃん 伏見錦通り店
Forgot to take a picture sadly enough.
This wasn't my first time going to a 'Yama-chan' izakaya. It seems like quite a popular chain in Nagoya. The great thing about them is they have no smoking seats, which is an absolute must for me. The food on the other hand isn't anything special. Which I generally find isn't as important in izakayas anyway, because they're more about having fun with friends, for which yama-chan is a fine location. If, however, you want to enjoy good food, go some place else.

Sushi in Sakae(Nagoya) @ 金沢まいもん寿司 梅鉢亭
This is the best sushi I've had in Nagoya. The sushi was very well put together. They cut the fish nearly perfectly and the sushi just looks beautiful as a result. It tasted great too. Especially the white fish were fantastic! The crab was the best I ever had(although I haven't had good crab very often) and the Anago had sadly enough cooled down a bit by the time I got to it, but it was still amazing!
The service was great too as usual in Japan and I have to mention the restaurant itself. It's a beautiful place and if I lived in Nagoya I'm sure I'd come back here very often. Because for 2500Yen it was good value for money too!
